Junior Summer School 2019

Group one from Saturday 29th June until 14th July (FULL)
Group two from Saturday 13th July until 28th July (FULL)

We offer English Classes for all ages throughout the year. During the month of July we offer a Junior Summer school in Cardiff U.K We work in conjunction with Peartree Languages, a language academy based in Cardiff. We provide an opportunity for students aged between 13 and 17 to improve their English in a fun and exciting way as well as experience how English speaking people live and communicate on a daily basis. At the same time parents can relax knowing that their children are accompanied and being taken care of at all times from the moment they leave Catalonia until they return home.

Our groups have approximately 15 students. they will be mixed with other small groups from other countries so students are encouraged at all times to speak in English. The students are mixed in multilingual groups during the English classes (according to level) in the mornings, as well as on the activities in the afternoons and weekends. Our objective is that English is spoken and practiced the maximum time available and this would not be possible if the students were surrounded by large groups of Catalan or Spanish speakers. Cardiff is a safe place and despite being a city, it is not too big and it is easy to find your way around. It is also economically priced compared with other cities like London, Dublin and Edinburgh.

Welcome to Cardiff
Cardiff is the capital city of Wales. As the Capital City it has a rich cultural history and at the same time is vibrant and diverse. People are hospitable and you will find it easy to make friends and mix with local people to practice your English. From the two thousand year old castle, to the beautiful and modern Cardiff Bay, Cardiff and its surrounding area has something for everyone, and an almost an inexhaustible list of attractions to visit. The busy city centre has excellent shopping and many coffee shops, cafes, museums, cinemas, theatres, indoor bowling, swimming pools, ice rink, climbing centres and library. Cardiff has around 380.000 habitants and is situated in the south west of the United kingdom. It is a very famous University City and has international students From all over the world.
Cardiff is the capital of Wales
Located in the United Kingdom (U.K.)
Approximately 200km from London

Welcome to Peartree
Peartree Languages is based in Cardiff and opened in 2005. This is Nicky Partridge, the owner. Nicky is a fully trained English Teacher and a qualified Examiner. She has been organising Junior Summer Schools for many years and has lots of experience. Nicky studied at the University of Southampton where she obtained her degree in European Studies specialising in Modern Languages. She began her teaching career in the same year when she taught EFL to children in Cambridge.

Junior summer school programme
Every morning from Monday to Friday from 9am to 12.30pm the students have
English classes. The students all sit a short test on the first morning to determine what their level is and are then divided into groups accordingly.
Classes are held at a very modern further education building called Cardiff and Vale College situated in the city centre. It has all the latest technology and facilities.
We have lunch together in this building around 12.30pm until around 1.30pm
Student English Classes are designed to be creative and fun and since the groups are mixed this means the maximum amount of English is spoken during this time.

Afternoon Activities
These start around 1.30pm until around 5-6pm, depending on the activity. They range from visits to museums and places of interest to group activities and treasure hunts, bowling, climbing, skating, science and music workshops and much more.

Excursions
On Saturdays there are excursions to various places of interest outside of Cardiff. We leave around 8.30 and return around 6pm.

Home stay
Students will live with a Family from Cardiff during their stay. There may also be other students staying in the same house but these will be of different nationalities. Our objective is that students speak English in the house. All families have to go through a strict application process and have to pass police checks and house inspections. This process it not only monitored by Peartree Languages but also by the British Council of which Peartree Languages is accredited. Families can be of all ages, can be single parents or married with and without children. The family will provide breakfast, packed lunch and evening meal. Students will be made to feel at home and encouraged to eat, watch T.V, play games together and most importantly speak English all the time. Families could have dogs, cats and other domestic animals. All houses have internet access.

Certificates & Presentations
At the end of the course each student is given a certificate showing their level and a report listing what they have learnt, how they have improved and their general behaviour and attitude throughout the course.

Our service
We meet students and parents at the airport here in Catalonia . After saying goodbye, we accompany the students on the flight to the UK and then to meet their home stay families in Cardiff. For the first few mornings we meet students from the bus and accompany them to the college where they will do their English classes. We continue to do this until all students are comfortable with travelling around Cardiff. We meet up again with them every lunchtime and spend the afternoon accompanying them on their daily activities. We are available 24 hours should any student need medical assistance or have any other problems that need to be resolved. We stay in contact with parents and keep them updated on the progress of their children. At the end of the stay we accompany the students on the flight back to Catalonia and meet up with their parents once again at the airport.

Why is English Time different from other organisers?
Our service is very personal and our groups are small (approximately 15 students), which means on arrival in Cardiff they can be mixed with other small groups from other countries so students are encouraged at all times to speak in English.
The students are also mixed into multilingual groups during the English classes (according to level) in the mornings, as well as on the activities in the afternoons and weekends.
Our objective is that English is spoken and practiced the maximum time available and this would not be possible if the students were surrounded by large groups of Catalan or Spanish speakers.
Even though Dolors and Darren are fluent Catalan and Spanish speakers we avoid using these languages during our stay in Cardiff unless we need to offer our students emotional support or in the event of a medical issue arising.

JOEL'S PARENTS

The stay in Cardiff last summer for our son was a magnificent experience. It was the first time that he had travelled abroad without us and Darren and Dolors acted not just like his teachers but as if they were his own parents. For us Darren and Dolors are a synonym of trust and peace of mind. The attention given to us prior to the trip was excellent. Darren and Dolors explained to all three of us in detail how the trip would be and they answered all our doubts and questions. The organisation was amazing very well planned from the venue where our son would study in the mornings, with Nicky, to the afternoon activities he would undertake etc. We were very lucky with the host family too as they made Joel feel very welcome and treated him well. We still keep in contact with them!!! It was such a fantastic and unforgettable experience that this summer he will repeat it.

BERNAT'S PARENTS

Bernat is 13 years old and he went to Cardiff last year. The experience was so enriching for him, both on a personal and educational level. His level of English improved a lot. Furthermore Darren and Dolors dedication was excellent and this was so calming and reasuring for us as his parents. It went so well and for this reason this year he will repeat the experience.

JOEL Massegur

My stay in Cardiff last summer was one of the best experiences in my life because I learned a lot in Peartree language school with teenagers of all nationalities. We did different activities in the afternoon and excursions. It was great to be with my host family. They were very kind. We went to different places like Cardiff bay, Barry Island, Castell Coch… And nowadays I keep in touch with them. Darren and Dolors took care of us at all times. I improved my English a lot in a fun way!!! I’m going to go back again this summer!

MARIA Davesa

This summer I spent two weeks in Cardiff and it was an unforgettable experience as I made many good friends from other countries. Everything was very different there and the first few days it was difficult to adapt to living with my new family and surroundings.

In the mornings we went to college to study English and in the afternoons we did activities, such as climbing, swimming, visiting museums and places of interest, with all the new friends I had made.

The leaders (Darren and Dolors) were always there for us and made sure we were not alone. I was very pleased.

I recommend this experience as you learn a lot and have a really good time.
